Carer's Allowance :
Carer's Allowance is classed as an income replacement benefit and the government will treat someone who is claiming Carer's Allowance as having a job. Due to this the carer will be credited with National Insurance contributions and they will not be required to 'sign on'.
Carer's Allowance can usually be claimed by someone who is caring for another person as long as the following conditions are met:
The person who needs assistance has been awarded Attendance Allowance or Disability Living Allowance where the care component has been awarded at the medium or higher rate. Or the person needing assistance is in receipt of Constant Attendance Allowance.
The person claiming Carer's Allowance has to be over 16 years.
The person claiming must not earn over £100 per week, however; a person's savings are not assessed.
The person provides care for 35 hours or more per week.
There is no longer an upper age limit for claiming Carer's Allowance, however, if in receipt you will not be able to receive state retirement pension in addition to the Carer's allowance.
Full payment of Carers Allowance is £53.90 per week, however, if you are on Income Related Employment and Support Allowance, the Carer's Allowance will appear as a carer's premium within that benefit.
Please note that when this benefit is awarded it may reduce the benefit of the person needing assistance if they are receiving Income Based Employment and Support Allowance.
