Research: UK not alone in expecting big rise in very old The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has predicted that the cost of caring for elderly people in industrialised nations could treble by 2050, with 10% of people in OECD countries being more than 80 years old by 2050. This contrasts with 4% in 2010 and less than 1% in 1950. The OECD says that Governments need to make their long-term care policies more affordable and provide better support for family carers and professionals. The report has useful summary data about long term care in the different OECD countries: www.oecd.org/document/23/0,3746,en_21571361_44315115_47659479_1_1_1_1,00.html#data
