Minister of State for Care Services, Paul Burstow MP, and the Care Quality Commission announced a new Excellence Award for social care providers, due to start in April/May 2012. The detail of this scheme is yet to be published. Why the old system was abolished one has to wonder. However, the fact that the new award will have to be purchased appears to be yet another example of how statutory costs are being met by the private sector. The scheme will be voluntary (social care providers can choose to apply for the award) and will involve a proportionate charge. CQC will seek expressions of interest to deliver the scheme in the spring, and will welcome bids from across the private and voluntary sector. CQC’s announcement about the scheme can be found at www.cqc.org.uk/newsandevents/newsstories.cfm?cit_id=37165&FAArea1=customWidgets.content_view_1&usecache=false
