Housing Benefit:
Housing Benefit can be claimed to help pay for the rent on a Council property. It can no longer be claimed for help toward rent if the person lives in a private house, however; if the person was receiving Housing Benefit prior to April 2008 they will continue to receive it.
Housing Benefit may be paid when a person is on a low income or on income related benefits. Claimants have to have savings less than £16,000 if they are under 60 years. For people over 60 years there is no upper limit on savings however interest on the savings may be considered as income.
If a person is on income related benefits such as Income Support, Income Related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Related Job Seekers Allowance or Pension credits then they will normally get 100% of the benefit entitlement toward the cost of their rent .
