In a landmark legal case which began last week a judge at the Court of Protection in London will be asked to decide whether a severely brain-damaged woman should be allowed to die. She was severely brain-damaged following encephalitis and is in a minimally conscious state. It is this that makes the case significant as previous cases which have come before the courts have involved patients who were in persistent vegetative state.
